Legacy practice management system — deeply integrated but firms are increasingly migrating to modern platforms

⚖️ Practice Management Contact for pricing

Overview

LawMaster is a legacy legal practice management system that served Australian law firms for over 40 years. While it remains a deeply capable platform — covering matter management, document management, trust and office accounting, workflow automation, time recording, billing, and integrated payroll with STP compliance — it is now widely regarded as a legacy system. Few firms are actively moving to LawMaster; instead, the market trend is migration away from it to modern cloud-native platforms such as Clio, Actionstep, or Smokeball. LawMaster was acquired by Actionstep in October 2024, and the product's long-term roadmap should be confirmed with the vendor. Replacing LawMaster can be complex due to its deep integration of accounting, payroll, and practice management in a single platform.

Key Capabilities & Differentiators

LawMaster's strength was always its depth of integration — practice management, accounting, payroll, and document management built into a single platform rather than bolted on through third-party integrations. This same depth makes it complex to replace, as firms must find equivalent coverage across multiple modern tools or a single platform like Actionstep. Following the Actionstep acquisition, LawMaster clients have access to the broader Actionstep ecosystem, and Actionstep is the natural migration path for most LawMaster users.
